Tibetans maintain that Tibet was historically an independent nation with its own language, currency, legal system, and borders. While they acknowledge historical ties to various Chinese dynasties, they view these as a "priest-patron" spiritual relationship rather than political subordination. They argue that the 1950 Chinese military entry was an illegal invasion and that the subsequent "17-Point Agreement" cementing Chinese rule was signed under duress. The Chinese governemnt asserts that Tibet has been an inseparable part of China since the Yuan Dynasty (13th century). They argue that the People’s Liberation Army "peacefully liberated" Tibet in 1950–1951 f Freedom of speech and assembly are heavily restricted. Monasteries are heavily monitored via facial recognition and security forces, and peaceful advocacy for Tibetan language rights or displaying images of the Dalai Lama can lead to severe criminal charges.

The Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 were a series of student-led, pro-democracy demonstrations in Beijing, China, that ended in a violent military suppression on June 3–4, 1989.
